My Father tells me a story from his early days as a wall and floor tiler in Aberdeen. He was tiling a butchers shop in George Street and every day the butcher boiled mince in a large copper boiler. One day the boiler malfunctioned and after overheating it caved in, contorted and twisted. The butcher tried in vain to hammer out the boiler, each of the other butchers tried knocking the boiler back to shape but it got worse until they gave up and called in the boiler maker. The following morning the boiler maker appeared and after looking closely at the boiler took out a copper hammer and a block of wood and with one heavy blow he bashed the boiler which immediately sprang back to its original shape, as good as new. The boiler maker asked for 10 shillings for the repair (which was a hefty sum in those days) The butcher was astonished at this expense for such a fast repair, and hoping to outwit the boiler maker he cleverly requested an itemised bill for the work. The following morning my father heard the butcher laughing loudly after the post was delivered and on enquiry the butcher showed my father the itemised bill from the boiler maker and it read like this .....

2/    Time charge for hammering the copper boiler ...... 1d
3/    A lifetimes knowledge in knowing where to hit the boiler ....... 9' 10d
